How to Play Nim

Play Nim ↗

Game guide · NEW61

Making your first moves in Nim

Read the aim of Nim, then make your first move. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

A focus for your next round

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Make the next step deliberately.

What the game asks you to do

Remove the last counter on the board to win. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Check the rules when you are unsure.

The playing sequence

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Choosing and moving on screen

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Look at the feedback after the action.

Learn from a sample situation

With piles of 1 and 2, a move may empty one pile, but cannot remove one counter from both in the same turn. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Notice the change in the playing area.

One detail worth checking

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Compare the situation with the worked example. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
